Justin Lucas is entering his
third year with the Hawks. As a freshman,
he jumped into the role of starting varsity goaltender. It was the
first time a freshman became the full time starter in goal at Hudson
Catholic. He was also the first freshman starter of a Gordon Conference
team since Bergen Catholic's Zane Kalemba in 2000. Lucas started in 21
games. His first varsity win was against St. Joseph's of Metuchen on
December 12, 2003. He capped his season off being voted as Second Team
All-Gordon Conference by the Gordon Conference coaches. Last year, the
team struggled
defensively making it difficult for Lucas to post the numbers he did in
his freshman year. This year, Lucas will skating on offense at leftwing. Lucas started playing hockey at the age of 5 in Bayonne. His first travel team was the Bayonne Rangers mite "C" team when he was in 1st grade coached by coach Frank McGady. The following year, he moved up to Mite "B". His last mite year, he played on the New Jersey Devils Youth mite "A" team. As a squirt, he stayed with the Devils on their Tier I Squirt "AA" team for two years. Lucas moved to the Jersey Penguins for two years on their Pee-wee "AA" team. As a first-year bantam, he played on the Penguins Bantam "A" team. Two years ago, he was back playing Tier I with the Ice House Avalanche Bantam Major "AAA" team. Last year, he was with the Bayonne Rangers Midget Major "AA" team. This year, he is on the Wildcats Junior "C" team. Lucas qualified for the USA Hockey Atlantic District Select-13 team in 2002 and traveled to Kent State University for a USA Hockey tournament that August. He has also played in the Garden State Games youth division for a couple of years, one year being named as the All-Tournament team goaltender. The past two summers, he played at the Scholastic level. This year, he was selected as a Garden State Games All-Star. At Hudson Catholic, Lucas is a Lasalian Scholar. He is also on the Student Council, a Peer Minister, member of the National Honor Society and an editor for the school paper, The Commentator. In addition to playing hockey, Lucas likes to cook, build models, play the bass guitar and raise lizards. His older brother, Ryan, class of 2003, played three years of varsity hockey at Hudson Catholic. Lucas went on to play varsity hockey at the University of Scranton. His younger brother, Daniel, is a sophomore and a member of the Wildcats Junior "C" team. |
