December 5:
St. Mary's 5 - HAWKS 2
After falling behind 2-0 to eight-time New York state
champion St. Mary's, the Hawks pulled to within one at the 9:11 mark of
the 2nd period when Anthony Buttner banged in a rebound goal for the
Hawks. The play started when Marc Malone carried the puck into the zone
and shot on net. Anthony Crupi got the rebound to Buttner for the
score. Later in the second, the Gaels went up 3 - 1 before Edgar Soto
cut the lead to one with 33 seconds remaining in the second. John Reid
and R.J. Miller both assisted on the goal. This was Soto's first career
varsity goal.
The Gaels scored twice in the third period to put the game out of reach
for the Hawks. Five different players scored for St. Mary's (7 - 3 - 1). Justin Lucas, in his varsity debut in
goal, made 28 saves for Hudson Catholic while Josh Roarke made 23 for
the Gaels.

December 8: C.B.A. 3 - HAWKS 1
After a scoreless first period, C.B.A. struck for two
goals in the second period. The Colts went up 3-0 before Tom Mahalchick
pulled the Hawks to within two goals with five minutes left in the
game. Mahalchick tipped in a Joe Kazimar shot for the score, Ryan
Sherry started the play and also received an assist. Justin Lucas made
33 saves in net for the Hawks will Ryan DeCeuster made 14 saves for
C.B.A.

December
12: HAWKS 6 - St. Joseph's
(Metuchen) 3
Derek Bruzzese took all
of 47 seconds to put the Hawks up 1-0 in this Gordon Conference matchup
in Pershing Field when his wristshot found the far corner of the net.
Tom Mahalchick assisted on the goal. Ryan Sherry would make it 2-0 nine
minutes later with an unassisted goal. In the second period, the Hawks
and the Falcons would trade powerplay goals for a 3-1 Hawk lead.
Mahalchick's goal was assisted by Sherry and Edgar Soto.
Late in the second
period, the Falcons had over a three-minute 5 on 3 advantage, but it
was the Hawks J.R. Reid scoring the shorthanded goal putting the Hawks
up 4-1. Early in the third, Anthony Buttner picked off a pass along the
boards and slapped in a goal for a 5-1 lead. The Falcon's would tally
two goals later in the period to pull to within two before Reid put it
out of reach with his second goal of the night. The play started when
Soto fed defenseman Rick Tauber with a mid-ice pass. Tauber skated in
alone and shot. Falcon goalie Pat Pozzolano wasn't able to control the
rebound and Reid smacked it in for the score.
Hawk goalie Justin Lucas made
29 saves to pick up his first varsity win in net while the Hawks killed
off eight of nine powerplays in this penalty filled game. Pozzolano
made 24 saves while Chris Pitoscia had a goal and two assists for the Falcons.
This
win runs Hudson Catholic unbeaten streak over St. Joseph's to 12
games
(10 wins and 2 ties) stretching back to January 10, 1997 (a 4-3 win in
the
Bridgewater Arena). The last time Hudson Catholic lost to St. Joseph's
of Metuchen was a 9-0 defeat on January 29, 1991 (the two teams did not
face each other for six years after that). The first ever meeting
between
the two teams was in December of 1987 which resulted in a 2-1 Hawk win.
Hudson Catholic has an overall record of 13 wins 2 losses and 3 ties
with
the Falcons.

15: Bergen Catholic 6 - HAWKS 0
An all-around bad night
for the Hawks as they were defeated by defending state champion Bergen
Catholic at Pershing Field. The Hawks who were outshot 42 to 14
received a 36 save performance from goalie Justin Lucas. Jon Goffredo
and Matt Keough each netted a pair of goals for the Crusaders.

19: St. Peter's Prep 9 - HAWKS 1
It was a long night for
the Hawks as they lose to their cross-town rivals. Justin Lucas made 34
saves for the Hawks and Tom Mahalchick netted the Hawk's lone goal.
Billy Dwyer made 15 saves for the Marauders while Brandon Whitford had
three goals and three assists. The win for Prep snaps Hudson Catholic's
five game winning streak over St. Peter's going back to 1996.

December
22: HAWKS 5 - Brick 3
The Hawks banged home
four second-period powerplay goals to lead them to victory over the
Dragons of Brick High School at the Ocean Ice Palace. After falling
behind 2-0 on Brick powerplay goals, the Hawks took over. Ryan Sherry,
who had four points in the game, netted the first powerplay goal at the
4:02 mark of the second when Rick Tauber set him up for the goal.
On a
5 on 3 man advantage, Anthony Crupi passed the puck to Joe Kazimar at
the blueline, whose shot eluded Brick's Rich Philpot, for the goal, his
first of two goals, at 8:07. About a minute later at 9:10, the
Hawks stuck again, when Sherry fed the puck to Steven Purn, who's shot
from the blueline found the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead.
For Purn, it was his first varsity goal. With less then 30 seconds left
in the second period, the Hawks struck for their final powerplay goal,
when Sherry made a perfect cross-ice feed to Joe Kazimar, streaking in
from the far point, who one-timed a shot behind the Brick goalie. The
Hawks converted on four of the seven powerplay opportunities they had
in the second period.
In
the third, Edgar Soto chipped a pass to Sherry, who scored on a
breakaway for a 5-2 lead. With their goalie pulled for the extra
attacker, Vinny Trotter scored for Brick with 8 seconds left in the
game. Justin Lucas made 17 saves for the Hawks while Philpot made 18
for the Dragons as the Hawks outshot Brick 23-20. The Hawks were 4 for
8 on the powerplay while Brick was 2 for 9. The Hawks are now 2-2 in
the Gordon Conference and in a 3-way tie for fourth place.

January 2: Bergen Catholic 3 - HAWKS 1
Bergen Catholic scored
15 seconds into the game to take a quick lead, but the Hawks responded
21 seconds later to tie the score. John Reid scored his 3rd goal of the
season off assists from Tom Mahalchick and Derek Bruzzese. The
Crusaders would tally again at the 6:45 mark of the first. After a
scoreless second period, Bergen Catholic added an insurance goal midway
through the third period for a 3-1 final. Justin Lucas made 36 saves
for the Hawks while Ryan Carroll made 23 for the Crusaders as the Hawks
were outshot 39 to 24.

January 5: St. John Vianney 7 - HAWKS 4
Ryan Sherry and John
Reid scored first period goals to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage after
one period. R.J. Miller and Edgar Soto set up Sherry's score while Tom
Mahalchick set up Reid's. Vianney would score three straight in the
second period to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lancers would score a powerplay goal early in the third for a 5-2
lead before the Hawks came storming back. Derek Bruzzese would tip in a
Mahalchick shot for the first goal. Reid also assisted. Anthony Crupi
would notch his first varsity goal unassisted to pull the Hawks to
within one goal with less then five minutes to play. Unfortunately,
this was as close as the Hawks came when the Lancers scored to make it
6-4 and then added an empty-net goal for the final. Justin Lucas made
26 saves for the Hawks while Frank DiRoma made 8 for the Lancers.

January 9: HAWKS 4 - Brick 4
Four times in the game
the Hawks would take the lead and four times the Dragons would come
back to tie it. Edgar Soto gave the Hawks the first lead when he
intercepted a pass and scored on a breakaway in the first period. After
Brick tied it with a powerplay goal early in the second, Rick Tauber
gave the Hawks their second lead when he scored off an assist from J.R.
Reid.
After Brick again tied it, Joe Kazimar would score a powerplay goal,
his 4th of the year, 13 seconds into the third period. Brick would
again tie it before R.J. Miller scored his first varsity goal off a
perfect cross-ice pass from Ryan Sherry. Brick's Mike Farr would score
his second goal of the game to tie it for the last time with 3:30
remaining in the game.
Justin Lucas made 14 saves for the Hawks while Rich Philpot made 17
saves for the Dragons.

January 11: Don Bosco Prep 4 - HAWKS 1
Don Bosco would score
twice in the first period to take the 2-0 lead into the second. The two
teams went scoreless in the second. Derek Bruzzese would score a
powerplay goal, off an assist from J.R. Reid, early in the third to
pull the Hawks to within one goal. That's a close as the Hawks got as
the Ironmen's Mark Hruber scored two powerplay goals late in the third
to ice the game for Don Bosco in game that saw four of the game's five
goals come off the powerplay.
Hawk's
Justin Lucas made 47 saves in net while Charlie D'Angelo made 17 saves
for the Ironmen.
