2003-04 VARSITY RESULTS

December 5:   St. Mary's 5 - HAWKS 2

After falling behind 2-0 to eight-time New York state champion St. Mary's, the Hawks pulled to within one at the 9:11 mark of the 2nd period when Anthony Buttner banged in a rebound goal for the Hawks. The play started when Marc Malone carried the puck into the zone and shot on net. Anthony Crupi got the rebound to Buttner for the score. Later in the second, the Gaels went up 3 - 1 before Edgar Soto cut the lead to one with 33 seconds remaining in the second. John Reid and R.J. Miller both assisted on the goal. This was Soto's first career varsity goal.
The Gaels scored twice in the third period to put the game out of reach for the Hawks.  Five different players scored for St. Mary's
(7 - 3 - 1). Justin Lucas, in his varsity debut in goal, made 28 saves for Hudson Catholic while Josh Roarke made 23 for the Gaels.
December 8:   C.B.A. 3 - HAWKS 1

After a scoreless first period, C.B.A. struck for two goals in the second period. The Colts went up 3-0 before Tom Mahalchick pulled the Hawks to within two goals with five minutes left in the game. Mahalchick tipped in a Joe Kazimar shot for the score, Ryan Sherry started the play and also received an assist. Justin Lucas made 33 saves in net for the Hawks will Ryan DeCeuster made 14 saves for C.B.A.

December 12:   HAWKS 6 - St. Joseph's (Metuchen) 3

Derek Bruzzese took all of 47 seconds to put the Hawks up 1-0 in this Gordon Conference matchup in Pershing Field when his wristshot found the far corner of the net. Tom Mahalchick assisted on the goal. Ryan Sherry would make it 2-0 nine minutes later with an unassisted goal. In the second period, the Hawks and the Falcons would trade powerplay goals for a 3-1 Hawk lead. Mahalchick's goal was assisted by Sherry and Edgar Soto.
Late in the second period, the Falcons had over a three-minute 5 on 3 advantage, but it was the Hawks J.R. Reid scoring the shorthanded goal putting the Hawks up 4-1. Early in the third, Anthony Buttner picked off a pass along the boards and slapped in a goal for a 5-1 lead. The Falcon's would tally two goals later in the period to pull to within two before Reid put it out of reach with his second goal of the night. The play started when Soto fed defenseman Rick Tauber with a mid-ice pass. Tauber skated in alone and shot. Falcon goalie Pat Pozzolano wasn't able to control the rebound and Reid smacked it in for the score.
Hawk goalie Justin Lucas made 29 saves to pick up his first varsity win in net while the Hawks killed off eight of nine powerplays in this penalty filled game. Pozzolano made 24 saves while Chris Pitoscia had a goal and two assists
for the Falcons.
This win runs Hudson Catholic unbeaten streak over St. Joseph's to 12 games (10 wins and 2 ties) stretching back to January 10, 1997 (a 4-3 win in the Bridgewater Arena). The last time Hudson Catholic lost to St. Joseph's of Metuchen was a 9-0 defeat on January 29, 1991 (the two teams did not face each other for six years after that). The first ever meeting between the two teams was in December of 1987 which resulted in a 2-1 Hawk win. Hudson Catholic has an overall record of 13 wins 2 losses and 3 ties with the Falcons.

December 15:   Bergen Catholic 6 - HAWKS 0

An all-around bad night for the Hawks as they were defeated by defending state champion Bergen Catholic at Pershing Field. The Hawks who were outshot 42 to 14 received a 36 save performance from goalie Justin Lucas. Jon Goffredo and Matt Keough each netted a pair of goals for the Crusaders.
December 19:   St. Peter's Prep 9 - HAWKS 1

It was a long night for the Hawks as they lose to their cross-town rivals. Justin Lucas made 34 saves for the Hawks and Tom Mahalchick netted the Hawk's lone goal. Billy Dwyer made 15 saves for the Marauders while Brandon Whitford had three goals and three assists. The win for Prep snaps Hudson Catholic's five game winning streak over St. Peter's going back to 1996.
December 22:   HAWKS 5 - Brick 3

The Hawks banged home four second-period powerplay goals to lead them to victory over the Dragons of Brick High School at the Ocean Ice Palace. After falling behind 2-0 on Brick powerplay goals, the Hawks took over. Ryan Sherry, who had four points in the game, netted the first powerplay goal at the 4:02 mark of the second when Rick Tauber set him up for the goal.
On a 5 on 3 man advantage, Anthony Crupi passed the puck to Joe Kazimar at the blueline, whose shot eluded Brick's Rich Philpot, for the goal, his first of two goals, at  8:07. About a minute later at 9:10, the Hawks stuck again, when Sherry fed the puck to Steven Purn, who's shot from the blueline found the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead. For Purn, it was his first varsity goal. With less then 30 seconds left in the second period, the Hawks struck for their final powerplay goal, when Sherry made a perfect cross-ice feed to Joe Kazimar, streaking in from the far point, who one-timed a shot behind the Brick goalie. The Hawks converted on four of the seven powerplay opportunities they had in the second period.
In the third, Edgar Soto chipped a pass to Sherry, who scored on a breakaway for a 5-2 lead. With their goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Vinny Trotter scored for Brick with 8 seconds left in the game. Justin Lucas made 17 saves for the Hawks while Philpot made 18 for the Dragons as the Hawks outshot Brick 23-20. The Hawks were 4 for 8 on the powerplay while Brick was 2 for 9. The Hawks are now 2-2 in the Gordon Conference and in a 3-way tie for fourth place.

January 2:   Bergen Catholic 3 - HAWKS 1

Bergen Catholic scored 15 seconds into the game to take a quick lead, but the Hawks responded 21 seconds later to tie the score. John Reid scored his 3rd goal of the season off assists from Tom Mahalchick and Derek Bruzzese. The Crusaders would tally again at the 6:45 mark of the first. After a scoreless second period, Bergen Catholic added an insurance goal midway through the third period for a 3-1 final. Justin Lucas made 36 saves for the Hawks while Ryan Carroll made 23 for the Crusaders as the Hawks were outshot 39 to 24.
January 5:   St. John Vianney 7 - HAWKS 4

Ryan Sherry and John Reid scored first period goals to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage after one period. R.J. Miller and Edgar Soto set up Sherry's score while Tom Mahalchick set up Reid's. Vianney would score three straight in the second period to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lancers would score a powerplay goal early in the third for a 5-2 lead before the Hawks came storming back. Derek Bruzzese would tip in a Mahalchick shot for the first goal. Reid also assisted. Anthony Crupi would notch his first varsity goal unassisted to pull the Hawks to within one goal with less then five minutes to play. Unfortunately, this was as close as the Hawks came when the Lancers scored to make it 6-4 and then added an empty-net goal for the final. Justin Lucas made 26 saves for the Hawks while Frank DiRoma made 8 for the Lancers.
January 9:   HAWKS 4 - Brick 4

Four times in the game the Hawks would take the lead and four times the Dragons would come back to tie it. Edgar Soto gave the Hawks the first lead when he intercepted a pass and scored on a breakaway in the first period. After Brick tied it with a powerplay goal early in the second, Rick Tauber gave the Hawks their second lead when he scored off an assist from J.R. Reid.
After Brick again tied it, Joe Kazimar would score a powerplay goal, his 4th of the year, 13 seconds into the third period. Brick would again tie it before R.J. Miller scored his first varsity goal off a perfect cross-ice pass from Ryan Sherry. Brick's Mike Farr would score his second goal of the game to tie it for the last time with 3:30 remaining in the game.
Justin Lucas made 14 saves for the Hawks while Rich Philpot made 17 saves for the Dragons.
January 11:   Don Bosco Prep 4 - HAWKS 1

Don Bosco would score twice in the first period to take the 2-0 lead into the second. The two teams went scoreless in the second. Derek Bruzzese would score a powerplay goal, off an assist from J.R. Reid, early in the third to pull the Hawks to within one goal. That's a close as the Hawks got as the Ironmen's Mark Hruber scored two powerplay goals late in the third to ice the game for Don Bosco in game that saw four of the game's five goals come off the powerplay.
Hawk's Justin Lucas made 47 saves in net while Charlie D'Angelo made 17 saves for the Ironmen.
