2004-05 VARSITY RESULTS

December 6:   HAWKS 3  - Pope John XXIII 2

After giving Pope John a two goal lead (one on the powerplay) in the first period, the Hawks came back with three straight to win 3-2 in their opening game of the season at Pershing Field.
Derek Bruzzese opened the scoring for the Hawks early in the second period when he intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, went in on a breakaway and scored on a nice deke move.
Defenseman Chris Smith would net his first career varsity goal, a powerplay goal, only 52 seconds into the third period off a feed from Marc Malone to tie the game at two each. Smith would then net the winner with 47 seconds left in the game when his slapshot from the point went off the near post and into the net. Bruzzese assisted on the game winner.
Goalie Justin Lucas was spectacular in net, especially in the third period, turning aside 23 Pope John shots. Kevin Kobilinski made 25 saves in the losing effort for the Lions as the Hawks outshot Pope John 28 to 25. It was Coach Bob Smith's first win as Hudson Catholic's coach and it came against his former team.

December 10:   HAWKS 8 - Brick 3

John Reid scored his first career varsity hat trick and assisted on two other goals to lead the Hawks to a 9-3 victory over the Brick Dragons at Pershing Field raising their record to 2-0.
Reid opened the scoring when he tucked the puck under Brick goalie Mike Mulcahy just 24 seconds into the game. Brick would tie the game four minutes later before Derek Bruzzese would retake the lead for the Hawks off a an assist from Reid. Brick would again tie the game with a powerplay goal before Kevin Rodrigo notched his first career varsity goal shortly after when he buried a rebound. Edgar Soto and Ryan Braen received assists.
Marc Malone then scored his first career varsity goal off passes from Reid and Jeff Aliseo to close out the first period with the Hawks leading 4-2.
Brick went on the powerplay early in the second, but it was Reid who opened the period with a shorthanded breakaway goal. Braen started the play when he chipped a pass up to Reid. Brick would pull to within two goals again when they scored during a 4 on 4 situation. The Hawks went on the powerplay late in the period and it was Rodrigo notching his second goal of the night when he put in a Soto rebound to close out the second with the Hawks up 6 - 3.
In the third period, it was Reid again opening the scoring. This time even quicker then the first when he scored 16 seconds into the period off a pass from Malone. Soto would score an unassisted wraparound goal to finish out the scoring for the night. Later, it looked like Reid had his 4th goal when his shot went through the goalies legs and bounced out, but the referee did not see it go in and did not award Reid the goal.
Hawk goalie Justin Lucas made 29 saves in net while Dragon's goalie Mike Mulcahy finished with 32 as the Hawks outshot Brick 40 to 32.

December 13:   HAWKS 0 - Monsignor Farrell 0

Hawk goalie Justin Lucas made 39 saves
against Monsignor Farrell to register his first career varsity shutout in a rare double-shutout game in the Pavilion on Staten Island. The Lion's Jerry Conte and David D'Augusta combined for a shutout with 37 saves between them. Lucas' goal against average for the season falls to 1.67.

December 17:  Don Bosco Prep - HAWKS 1

After a scoreless first period, Marc Malone scored a powerplay goal at the 2:40 mark of the second period to give the Hawks the early lead. John Reid and Edgar Soto assisted on the goal. Brendon Reich tied the game for Don Bosco at the 9:45 mark of the second and start a three-goal rally over a 3:45 span. That was all of the scoring for the game as the third period went scoreless. Justin Lucas made 35 saves for the Hawks while Michael Lynch stopped 16 for the Ironmen at Pershing Field. This was the Hawks first loss for the season.

December 19:   Seton Hall Prep 7 -  HAWKS 0

This was an all around bad night for the Hawks as they lost to defending state champions Seton Hall Prep in Pershing Field. Rem Vanderbeek scored two goals and assisted on another for the Pirates who enjoyed a 56 - 10 edge in shots. Justin Lucas made 49 saves for the Hawks while Kevin Bendel made 10 for the Pirates.

December 27:   Bergen Catholic 5 -  HAWKS 0

December 29:    M.K.A. 3 - HAWKS 1

After going down by two goals in the openning minutes of the game, the Hawks pulled to within one goal in the 2nd period with a goal. John Reid sent a perfect pass to Derek Bruzzese, on a 2 on 1, who one times a shot behind the Cougars goalie. Unfortunatly, this was aclose as the Hawks got despite outshooting M.K.A. 26 to 20. M.K.A. added an insurance goal late in the third period. Hawk goalie JustinLucas made 17 saves in net.

The lone bright spot was when Marc Malone and Derek Bruzzese set up John Reid for a powerplay goal midway through the period. The Hawks toughened up in the third allowing only one controversial goal. Lucas made 47 saves in net as the Hawks were outshot 55 to 21.
